Students get glimpse of life in the military

Students from the northwest coast of Tasmania had a chance to check out military life when they toured the Kokoda Army Barracks in Devonport.

The tour, which introduced students to career opportunities in the Army, was conducted by the Transport Squadron. It included displays of heavy vehicles, weapons, field equipment and a fitness training program.

According to the students, a highlight of the tour was when they went into a black-out tent and had a chance to use the squadron’s night vision equipment to locate items.

Major Parker said, ‘Students were given a new dimension on the Army Reserves and how to get involved. They got to hear first hand about the things we do for goodwill such as disaster relief and humanitarian activities. They were able to hear about the difference between the Defence Force and the Reserves, which opened their eyes to new opportunities’. Major Parker is keen to provide activities such as this in the future and supports career education programs.

Students from five high schools and colleges took part in the tour, which was facilitated by MST Workplace Solutions Local Community Partnership and Defence Force Recruiting. A similar activity is planned for later this year at the Burnie Barracks.
