Big W offers apprenticeships and employment

Students in Warwick have learned about careers in transport and distribution, and taken up apprenticeships and employment at the local Big W Distribution Centre.

The opportunities stemmed from an Adopt a School project that started 2006 with students attending information sessions about the industry and the centre, which serves 75 Big W stores between Cairns to Sydney.

The five most committed students were then offered casual paid employment during the busy Christmas period.

By June 2007, two of the students are in full-time employment at the distribution centre. The other three are in School-based Australian Apprenticeships and pursuing a Certificate III in Transport and Distribution (Warehousing and Storage). The students are from Warwick State High School and SCOT PGC College.

The students will speak about their experiences at a coming awards night. They will also present information about the project to their younger classmates.

Similar projects are being proposed to other local industries, and a new group of students will be involved at the distribution centre.

The project has been organised by the Southern Downs Industry Education Association Local Community Partnership; the Regional Industry Career Adviser for Toowoomba, Darling Downs and South West Queensland; the National Industry Career Specialist; the distribution centre and the schools.
