Hospitality projects helps reduce skills shortages
Radisson Resort Gold Coast is doing a lot to increase its pool of skilled workers and reduce the skill shortages in the hospitality industry.
In particular, the resort is showing students from local high schools that hospitality is a valuable and rewarding career, not just a temporary job.
As part of providing practical and positive industry experiences in the area, the resort:
- recruits young people as Australian School-based Apprentices or part-time employees
- offers industry placements to teachers from associated schools
- gives schools tours of the property
- provides guest speakers for hospitality classes in associated schools. These are provided during September and October, leading up to school-subject selection for students.
Their efforts are paying off—Radisson Resort Gold Coast currently has 25 Australian School-based Apprentices, from 12 schools, who are working toward their Certificate III in Hospitality Operations.
Participating students have prepared presentations on hospitality that they deliver to their classmates. They also give presentations to students taking part in three-day residential programs at the resort.
The Scisco Career Pathways Local Community Partnership facilitates contact between the resort, and the region’s schools and young people.
