Rory striving for full-time apprenticeship

About two years ago when he was in year 10, Rory Smeaton started a Foundation Victorian Certificate in Applied Learning (VCAL).

He did this in conjunction with a Certificate II in the Sport and Recreation VET program, and completed a successful placement with the Football Federation. He has now moved on to his Intermediate VCAL program and is continuing with his VET course

Because of his ongoing interest in sport, Rory was offered an Australian School-based Apprenticeship with VAYSAR, the state peak body for Aboriginal sport and recreation. He is in the office every Friday, dealing with incoming and outgoing mail, sending faxes, and designing posters for sports carnivals and invitations to awards nights. He says he loves what he does.

Rory, who is Indigenous, currently attends Hawthorn Secondary College. He hopes his involvement at VAYSAR will help lead him to a full-time apprenticeship when he completes year 12 in 2007.

His efforts have been supported by Inner Melbourne VET Cluster Local Community Partnership.
