Students learn about health career opportunities

Country Health SA, in conjunction with FOCiS on Youth Local Community Partnership, took to the road to spread the word about the many careers available in the health sector.

As part of the ‘roadshow’, young professionals in nursing, speech pathology and health promotion spoke to more than 800 year 10 students across the south-east part of the state. They talked about what attracted them to their careers and the pathways they took to get there.

According to Julie Forgan, Workforce Planning Project Officer for Country Health SA, ‘Students gained a realistic insight into the good, the fantastic and the challenging aspects of studying and working towards a career in health’.

Julie said the ageing population has had a significant impact on the industry—with baby boomers in the health workforce starting to retire and, at the same time, people living longer and drawing more on health services.

For this reason, a common message of the roadshow was that health professionals are in great demand and qualifications are generally recognised across Australia and in many overseas destinations.
