As a parent you have a key role to play in helping your child make career choices. To provide the best possible support and guidance, parents need current information on the many pathways available to young people. It’s important to talk through options available for further study and employment after school.

You can help your child by being positive about their ideas and their chances of finding a satisfying career path. Consider together their suitability for different jobs and help them identify their attributes, interests, likes and experiences. Talk with them about their hopes and visions for the future and where they want to work or study.
Other things you can do together are:
-
read the Job Guide for descriptions of more than 1500 occupations
-
explore Year12 - What next and myfuture
- talk about the things they like to and want to learn
- talk about the activities they are involved in outside of school
- talk to your child’s teachers and the school career adviser
- talk about the work experience and community work they do
- go to careers expos, and TAFE and university open days
- research people they admire.
