what's happening in the transport & logistics industry

Transport and Logistics

The Transport and Logistics industry is the backbone of the Australian economy. It affects all of our daily livesfrom what we can buy, to the prices we pay for goods, to how we get from place to place. It also provides a range of services that are integral to the operation of all other industries and enterprises.

There's never been a better time to consider a Transport and Logistics career. The industry is large and continues to grow, and there is high demand for skilled staff.

In 2003–04, the  industry employed more than 427 000 people and represented 4.5 per cent of all Australian workers.  Transport and Logistics contributes about 9 per cent of Australia's GDP, almost double that of education, retail and even tourism.

Trend data shows that employment in the industry is predicted to increase by an average of 1.8 per cent a year until 2008which is 12.5 per cent higher than the all-industries rate. A recent survey also showed that more than 90 per cent of industry employers expect to increase their demand for qualified staff over the next five years.

The industry ensures the smooth movement of passengers and freight throughout Australia and overseas. The industry's network includes ports, roads, railways, freight terminals, airports, and distribution and materials handling centres.  Throughout this network, vehicles of all types are constantly on the move.

The industry operates across seven key sectors:

  • road transport
  • warehousing
  • stevedoring
  • maritime
  • aviation
  • rail transport
  • logistics.
  • Employers range from small companies to large multinationals, and most sectors are exposed to competition at a national or international level. The industry is, however, dominated by small businesses, which account for the majority of firms.

The workforce is predominately male and the industry faces challenges in attempting to create a more even gender balance. The industry is also predicted to encounter challenges associated with an ageing workforce, however, the uptake of training is on the increase and programs such as VET in Schools ensure that young people are being exposed to career opportunities in the industry.
