Get a trade Get a trade

With the economy booming and skilled workers in high demand there has never been a better time to take up a trade—and there are so many options.

Some people have an out-of-date image of the trades—these days trades can lead to lucrative, long-term and independent careers. A trade can help you get the job or the skills you want.

If you want to know more about getting a trade, start with your career adviser or a teacher. They should be able to help you get information about further study, through TAFE or university, or on-the-job training, through an apprenticeship.

Some other starting points

Australian Apprenticeships are a fantastic way to start a trade. There aren’t any entry requirements, and as you train and work, you gain a nationally recognised qualification. Apprenticeships are open to anyone of working age.

Australian Apprenticeships cover 500 occupations from traditional trades to new and emerging industries you may never have heard of. To find out what’s on offer in your local area visit the Australian Apprenticeships Training Information Service.

Did you know you can start an apprenticeship while you are still at school? Australian School-based Apprenticeships let you gain a vocational and technical qualification while you complete your school studies. Many schools offer year 11 and 12 students these opportunities. To find out more, talk to your career adviser or school VET coordinator.

From 2007, some young people will also have the opportunity to attend Australian Technical Colleges. These colleges will cater for year 11 and 12 students who want to study for a year 12 certificate while doing an Australian School-based Apprenticeship. Twenty-five colleges are being established across Australia in locations with large numbers of young people and a strong industry base.

The Australian Government knows it’s not always easy to make ends meet when you start an apprenticeship. Depending on the trade you pursue, you might qualify for a tool kit worth up to $800 and a scholarship worth $1000. Visit Tools for your trade to find out how it works.
