Get a trade

A trade can help you get the job or the skills you want, and provide good-earning, long-term and independent careers.
If you want to know more about getting a trade, start with your career adviser or a teacher. They should be able to help you get information about further study, through TAFE or university, or on-the-job training, through an apprenticeship.
We have two activities—Structured Workplace Learning and the Adopt a School Program—that put you in actual work experiences so you can learn more about different jobs and industries while you are still in school.
Our Career and Transition Support program gives you access to up-to-date information you can use to help plan your future.
Some other starting points are:
- Australian Apprenticeships—covering 500 occupations from traditional trades to new industries you may never have heard of. The Australian Apprenticeships Training Information Service has more information.
- Australian School-based Apprenticeships—get a vocational and technical qualification while you are still at school. Talk to your career adviser or school VET coordinator.
- Australian Technical Colleges—for year 11 and 12 students who want to study for a year 12 certificate while doing an Australian School-based Apprenticeship.
-
Tools for your trade—depending on the trade you follow, you might
qualify for a tool kit worth up to $800 and a scholarship worth $1000.
